The Obelisk's History

The Obelisk was erected on Cape Dombey in 1852 and was used to navigate the entrance to Guichen Bay, as well as to store rocket lifesaving equipment. The firing of rockets, carrying baskets to distressed ships to bring passengers ashore, saved many lives. It later assisted passing ships with navigation because its height of 12m (40 ft) makes it visible 20km (12mles) out to sea.

The erosion of the land surrounding the obelisk will mean it will eventually fall away so make sure you visit this icon whilst staying in Robe.

If in Robe on a Friday night - make sure you visit the Wild Mulberry for Dinner.

They are only open on Friday nights and have the BEST rolled pork belly and my partner had a delicious Chicken dish. We walked in off the street but it is probably best to make a booking.

Christmas Parade 20th December

Parade starts from the Robe Primary School at 5pm.

There will be a BBQ, hot dags, donuts and cool drinks available on the lawns outside the Robe Institute during and after the parade.

The evening will conclude with carols in the Institute.

National Kitesurf Championships in Robe

The National Kite Surf Championships are here!!

They start Wednesday 21 with finals on Sunday 25 October, all at Robe’s famous Long Beach.

So if you are wondering what to do this week or weekend – jump in the car and come and have a look at over 100

competitors vying for the National Kite Surf Championships.

The tents will be set up at what locals refer to as Third Ramp along Long Beach. Take the Robe to Kingston Road

and approx 5km out of town you will see a sign saying “Surf Beach.” This unsealed road will take you all the way to

the car park where the event is located. If in doubt – ask a local where Third Ramp is!

How did we get this event to Robe? Through the determination and effort of local kite surf enthusiast and

qualified instructor Anthony Moore. Ant put in a submission to the committee and sold them on the idea that

Robe was the best spot for the national titles. Congratulations.
